Alexander inherited from his grandfather in 1529, the year after King James V had seized power in Scotland. He lived through the period immediately preceding the Scottish Reformation and during the crises of that movement. In 1542, Mary Queen of Scots succeeded to the Crown and in 1547 the Scots defeated the British in the Battle of Pinkie. In 1567 King James VI succeeded to the Crown. Alexander had seen three monarchs on the throne during his lifetime.
